The Cow Toilet is a relatively simple device designed to collect urine from dairy cows when they are present in an automated concentrate dispenser. Stimulation triggers the mixing reflex (emission of urine) and urine, rich in nitrogen products, is collected. This technique enables around 50% of the urine produced by dairy cows to be collected, reducing ammonia emissions. The urine can then be used as a substitute for mineral fertiliser or sold to various users.
The jury decided to award it a Silver Sabot because the system is already on the market. It could also be used to convert existing cow barns into low-ammonia buildings.
